OpenAI Images 2.5 brings faster generation and more precise editing to ChatGPT and the API
OpenAI Images 2.5 adds faster generation, sharper edits, Sketch, templates, and two new API image models.
OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.5 on September 8, bringing a new image model to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, Codex and the Images API. The company says the update is aimed at sharper detail, faster generation, more reliable edits and better control for creative workflows that involve reference photos, product images and repeated revisions.
The most practical claim is speed. OpenAI says Images 2.5 cuts generation latency by up to 50 percent compared with Images 2.0. It also says people create more than 3 billion images every week across ChatGPT Images and GPT Image models in the API, which gives the release a large everyday surface area rather than making it a niche research update.
What changes for users
For ChatGPT users, the release adds Sketch, a feature that lets someone draw a rough visual guide inside ChatGPT and use it as input for the final image. OpenAI is also adding templates for common formats such as posters, merchandise and product photos. Another workflow change is image comments, which let users point edits at specific parts of an image instead of rewriting the whole prompt.
Those changes matter because image generation often fails in the second and third edit, not the first draft. OpenAI says Images 2.5 is better at preserving subjects from reference photos, keeping lighting and texture natural, and following longer multi turn edit instructions without degrading earlier work. For creators and marketing teams, the decision value is simple: the model is more useful if it can change one element while leaving the composition and identity of the original asset alone.
API impact
Developers get two new API models. GPT Image 2.5 Flare is positioned as the default option, with higher quality than GPT Image 2 and 50 percent lower latency. GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst is designed for higher precision work that can tolerate longer generation times. OpenAI says both models are available in the API, while Images 2.5 is rolling out to all tiers on desktop, mobile and web.
The CyberOGZ read is that this release pushes image generation closer to an editing tool than a prompt novelty. Teams should still test identity preservation, brand consistency and rights review before moving production campaigns onto it. The useful signal will be whether fewer rounds are needed to reach an approved image, since that is where latency and fidelity claims turn into real savings.
